Flat-Coated Retriever OverviewThe Flat-Coated Retriever is one of several retrieving breeds that were bred from the Newfoundland in the 1800s. This is a gun dog which excels are retrieving on land and in water. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a strong body, a broad head, small dropped ears, and almond shaped eyes. The Flat-Coated Retriever's coat is medium length, straight and weather resistant.
The Flat-Coated Retriever is a moderately active dog who will typically attempt to match their family's activity level. If you are active your Flat-Coated Retriever will be active if you want to relax and watch TV for the evening the Flat-Coated Retriever will have no problem joining you there. The Flat-Coated Retriever just wants to do things with their owner. But keep in mind this dog was bred to hunt, so while an occasional day of relaxation is fine they will be happiest if they are allowed time to be outdoors and exercising. The Flat-Coated Retriever is happiest when participating in dog sports, going for a long walk or jog, playing on the agility course, or participating in field trials.
The Flat-Coated Retriever is a breed that needs an actively involved owner. They are good with children, although young dogs may be a little too rowdy for small kids. They are equally good with other dogs and with cats when raised with them.
