Curly-Coated Retriever Overview

The Curly-Coated Retriever is the oldest known retriever type dog. It originated in England as gun dog capable of finding a downed bird on land or water no matter how difficult the retrieve.

The Curly is an active, well-muscled dog bred for upland bird and waterfowl hunting. The Curly-Coated Retriever has dropped ears and a long tail and its recognizable tightly curled coat provides weatherproofing. Curly-Coated Retrievers can be very active, especially as puppies. They need vigorous daily exercise and will always be up for a run or swim.

This breed is still used for hunting and does best in a home where the dog can use these instincts. When not hunting, the Curly is a wonderful family dog, great with children, and usually calm in the house. He is affectionate and loyal but reserved with strangers.
